Reaction Roles Major Upgrade November 2023

A major upgrade to the Reaction Roles bot is here!

Over the course of the last year, we’ve been hard at work rewriting the bot from the ground up to make it easier to use, improve performance and stability, bring it into line with Discord’s newest APIs and lay the ground work for future enhancements.

Here’s What’s Changing

No More Voting!

We’ve completely removed all voting requirements in the bot. You no longer need to vote for the bot on Top.gg in order to create more than 3 reaction roles. With our new, upgraded and simplified premium system, you get lots of reaction roles for free with no voting required.

Improved Commands

We’ve updated the Reaction Roles slash commands. Most commands now work as sub-commands, rather than individually named commands. This makes it easier to understand what a command does as well as simplifies finding the command you need.

For example, previously, you would use the /listreactionroles command to view all your Reaction roles. Now you use the /reactionrole list command. When you type /reactionrole into Discord’s message box, you’ll see a list of all commands you can use to manage your Reaction roles. Or type /grouprole to see all commands available for Group roles.

For a full list of the command changes, please see our Command Upgrade Quick Reference page.

Upgraded Reaction Roles Premium

We’ve upgraded and simplified the way Reaction Roles premium subscriptions work and added a new Premium Plus tier for those super-power users.

We’ve also added a new Supporter subscription. Users who become a supporter get a special role in our support server as well as being able to use the /supporter directmessages command to enable/disable receiving DMs from the bot when they change their roles via a Reaction Role.

For more information, see our page dedicated to the Upgraded Reaction Roles Premium.

Brand New Features

We’ve added requirements and max-usage support for timed roles.

Internal Stability and Maintainability

Part of our work over the last year has been to improve the stability of the bot, reduce downtime, and drastically decrease the number of restarts needed. Thanks to this work, the Reaction Roles bot has been running super smoothly for the last several months.

Our new, upgraded bot continues those improvements, gets us up-to-date with the latest Discord features and APIs, and allows us to sustainably stay up-to-date going forward.

Discontinued Features

As part of the full rewrite of the bot, we’ve discontinued certain features that were either too complex or too little used to justify their continued support. If you are one of the rare few affected by the discontinuation of one of these features and would like to discuss options and workarounds, please open a ticket in our Support server and let us know.

For more information on the discontinued features, please see our page dedicated the Discontinued Reaction Roles Features.

Does any of this affect my current reaction roles?

TL;DR – Your existing data still works. Just checkout the updated command list and premium details.

Although the upgraded bot has improved the slash commands and implemented an upgraded premium system, all of your existing data is still available and working as it did before. Even if you are a Reaction Roles Free user, any premium features you might be using from before the upgrade (which were available via the discontinued voting system) will continue to work after the upgrade. However, you won’t be able to make new additions or modifications, except for disabling or deleting.
